Airlie Hall silver Surfers are looking for communities to partner with in an IT project.
The Airlie Hall Silver Surfers are a group of older ladies in rural Angus, Scotland, who operate their own cyber cafe on a Wednesday morning from their local village hall.
When the ladies meet they share home baking, news and IT knowledge. Learning from each other they have (among other successes) produced a book on local history which they designed and wrote themselves and are investigating the use of IT in health care to save long round trips to out patients departments (where appropriate). Their favourite IT application is the use of Skype to make free video phone calls from the village hall to family and friends overseas.
The group are self financing and have built up a bank of computers and have won various awards in the past including a BT Community Connections Award which got them a laptop and free broadband for a year.
This year they have been offered the chance to apply for a BT cluster award. The group are keen to hear from any similar groups who would like to communicate with them, share good practice and who would benefit from expanding their IT knowledge - and maybe a few recipes too.
If you think your group would fit the bill and would like to be a partner in a project to reduce rural isolation - and share in the award of free broadband for a year and other IT benefits please contact the supporting community worker in the first instance:
